During your period of registration you must take a test of ‘continued ability and fitness to give instruction’ (check test). The check test can be conducted in two ways. It can be as an observed lesson with a genuine pupil during which a senior Driving Standards Agency (DSA) examiner assesses the ADI’s instructional ability. Alternatively, it can be the examiner ‘role-playing’ the pupil.
You will be assessed on:
• method, clarity, adequacy and correctness of instruction
• the observation and proper correction of the pupil’s errors
• manner, patience, tact and ability to inspire confidence
ADIs will be check tested:
• within four years for Grade five and six instructors
• within two years for Grade four instructors
• or at the discretion of the Registrar
If you fail to demonstrate an acceptable standard in three consecutive check tests you could be removed from the Register and would have to re-qualify before being allowed to give paid instruction.
